YUI – Good-bye Days

December 4, 2006

Track List
1. Good-bye Days
2. Skyline
3. It’s Happy Line
4. Good-bye Days -instrumental-

Good-bye Days was YUI’s fifth single under SONY. It was for the movie Taiyo no Uta, in which YUI starred in as Amane Kaoru, a singer-songwriter afflicted with XP, a disease where her body is allergic to UV rays. So, the name used for the single was YUI for Amane Kaoru.

No doubt about it, this single is my favorite from YUI. Good-bye Days starts off slowly, as a mostly acoustic song with an acoustic guitar strumming, short electric chords and YUI’s vocals. The intro is very nice with the electric and acoustic guitars. By the chorus, she adds strings, drums, and bass to the mix. The melody for the verse it really beautiful and during the chorus, you can really feel the emotion in her voice. Plus, YUI hits this great note near the end. The bridge has a really full sound to it and it flows really well. Great arrangement.

The first b-side, Skyline, is an fun, upbeat song. I absolutely love the beginning and end with the guitar. The song is really optismitic with an analogy about wanting to fly well and reaching great heights. And it’s really catchy. Like, really really catchy. And there’s a great bridge in this song, too. While Good-bye Days was more of a ballad with soft vocals, this song has much stronger vocals and heavier on the drums and bass. I really love this song, because it’s so fun and free-spirited. Definitely worthy of a-side status.

The second b-side, It’s Happy Line, was a song that YUI had previously released in an indies single. Kind of sad that it was released as a second b-side, when it’s such a great song. There’s song really nice harmonies in parts of the chorus and the transitions going from loud to soft work very well. My only gripe about this song is the guitar solo that I actually really like but is repeated and takes some of its magic away. Unlike the previous tracks, this one has a bit more of a melancholy feel to it. Which I like.

I was obsessed with this single for quite a while and I still listen to it all the time. It’s definitely one of my favorite singles ever.
